Today is John Peel Day on BBC Radio 1

It's a year since John's last broadcast.
There are gigs going on in his honour across the world
I miss him terribly and feel blessed to have had the oppertunity to have met him once.
I was on work experience in London in '97 and had gotten into the habit of stopping on my way to oxford street tube station to talk to some of the homeless people there and I normally brought them some food or can of drink. One night I was sat in a doorway chatting to one of them, a girl my age, when I saw John walking past. I jumped up and fished my ever-present autograph book out of my bag and asked for his autograph. As he was signing it I decided to take th oppertunity to tell him I though he was really good looking (which I did). He looked up somewhat amused and asked how old I was, I told him I was 17 and he started chuckling away and said that he'd have to tell the missus when he got home as the last time a 17-year-old had told him he was good looking would have been way back in the 60s. He then handed back my autograph book and thanked me for the nice comments and then went on his way to do his radio show.
He signed the autograph 'John Peel - 57, Fab and Fun' and he truly was fab and fun and will never be forgotten.
